THE PRINCESS MARGARET HOSPITAL
About the Hospital
The Princess Margaret Hospital (TPMH), which was opened in 1959, is situated at the foot of the Port Hills, in the South of the city. It is located in Cashmere Road, near its intersection with Hackthorne Road.
The Princess Margaret Hospital is served by a number of City bus-routes, including "The Orbiter" which circles Christchurch continuously during extended hours in both Easterly and Westerly directions. This is a popular and convenient service (there is a bus every 15 minutes in each direction at peak times and every 30 minutes at other times) and the bus stops are in the Hospital forecourt.
Extensive refurbishment and re-modelling of facilities at TPMH has taken place between 1998 and 2001 and some new buildings have also been constructed for specialty services which have been newly introduced to the site.
There are two major specialty services based at TPMH - Older Person's Health Specialist Service and Mental Health Services.
Older Person's Health Specialist Service - The Princess Margaret Hospital
The CDHB Older Persons Health Specialist Service (OPHSS) is based at Princess Margaret Hospital, in the Christchurch suburb of Cashmere. OPHSS consists of three specialist services to cater for the unique needs of older people as well as managing the CDHB Community Dental Services. The three specialist services managed by OPHSS are Assessment Treatment and Rehabilitation (Inpatient) services, Community Services and Psychiatric Service for the Elderly.OPHSS caters to persons living within the CDHB geographical area who are aged 65 years and over, as well as persons 50-65 years with dementia or deemed ‘close in interest’ and approved by the Clinical Team. Care is delivered using the Interdisciplinary Team approach and includes; Dieticians, Geriatricians, Psychiatrists, Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Social Workers and Speech Language Therapists. The three services are supported by, and integrate with each team as required to seamlessly coordinate patient care.
Provides specialist inpatient assessment, treatment and rehabilitation services as well as care and/or treatment of a wide range of conditions such as acute illness, rehabilitation, chronic disability and palliative care.
Two interdisciplinary Community Services Teams that serve defined geographical areas (north-east and south-west), the Younger Persons Community Therapy Service, the Riley Community Rehabilitation Service, the Community Stroke Rehabilitation Service, Medical and Physiotherapy Outpatients and the Bone Health Service.
Entry to the Community Services and Psychiatric Service for the Elderly community services is through the Single Point of Entry (SPoE) with referrals triaged to the appropriate team and discipline. A Case Manager, linked to the referring GP practice, is identified for each referral. Interdisciplinary Teams are used to review and manage the response to clients requiring more than one discipline’s input.
Provides a comprehensive range of services including acute admission, inpatient services, ECT, community services, consultation/ liaison, education and outpatient/rural/regional outreach to manage and treat ‘organic’ psychiatric disorders such as delirium and dementia and ‘functional’ psychiatric disorders such as depression, bipolar and schizophrenia. Psychiatric Service for the Elderly also encompasses the Mabel Howard Clinic.
Predominantly provides oral health services for all children residing in the Canterbury and South Canterbury District Health Board areas, as well as coordination of adolescent oral health access and health promotion (through school-based clinics). Target populations are all children in the district aged 0-18 and Adults on low incomes requiring emergency dental services for the relief of pain.
These services are supported by a quality team administration staff,
orderlies, clinical records, Human Resource staff, finance staff, pharmacy
staff, cleaners and telephonists.
Mental Health Services - The Princess Margaret Hospital
A number of inpatient, outpatient and day-patient mental health services are provided at The Princess Margaret Hospital site.Inpatient service includes the Rehabilitation Service (Seager Clinic) which was moved from Hillmorton Hospital on the TPMH site. This service is located on the ground floor of The Heathcote Building.
Seager Clinic provides extensive care for people assessed as having a significant disorder arising from an established diagnosis of psychiatric illness and who require intensive support.
A number of specialty mental health services, some inpatient and some outpatient, are clustered in C Block of the main Hospital (a single-storey building immediately to the left of the Hospital’s main entrance) – these include:
Child Adolescent & Family mental health service Single Point of Entry (CAFLink) and the CAF Community Consult Liaison Team are based in the Heathcote Building.
Psychiatric Needs Assessments are carried out in the community by teams based at
the Hospital.
Mental Health Services’ management and administration is also based at TPMH in
The Heathcote Building.
