Their Roles and Responsibilities
Canterbury District Health Board
Members
- the Board has up to 11 members of whom are elected and are appointed by the Minister of Health by notice in the Gazette for terms of up to three years. DHB board members are accountable to the Minister of Health, (through the Chairperson of the Board) for the performance of the DHB.
Community & Public Health Advisory
Committee
– the boards appoints members to their committees. The committees comprise both board members and members of the public. A statutory governance role in providing the Board advice on the health needs of the resident population and any factors that the committee believes may adversely affect that health status, and to provide advice on priorities for use of the health funding provided.
Disability Support Advisory Committee
– the board appoints members to their committees. The committees comprise both board members and members of the public. A statutory governance role providing advice to the Board on the disability support needs of the resident population; the committee aims to ensure the kinds of disability support services provided or funded and the policies adopted promote the inclusion and participation in society, and maximise the independence of the people with disabilities within the Canterbury DHB’s resident population.

A statutory governance role in monitoring the financial and operational performance of the hospitals the Canterbury DHB owns, as well as assessing strategic issues relating to the provision of hospital services; gives the Board advice and recommendations on that monitoring and assessment.
Finance, Audit & Risk Committee
– the board appoints members to their committees. The committees comprise both board members and members of the public. Focus is strong governance over sight of the financial health of the Canterbury DHB.
CEO and Executive Management Team
– responsibility for management matters of the district health board. The Executive Management Team report directly to the CEO who in turn reports to the Chair of the District Health Board.
Hospital & Specialist Service - Management
Profiles
– responsibility for operational matters of the district health board and is headed by the General Manager of Hospital & Specialist Services who reports directly to the CEO and Executive Management Team.
Hospital & Specialist Service - Clinical & Medical Directors
– provides leadership to their particular specialty and gives overall direction and focus to the clinical services offered by the department. He or she is responsible for standards of clinical practice, including leadership and advice to medical staff in the department on clinical outcomes, productivity and cost efficiency. Clinical & Medical Directors report to the relevant Hospital General or Group Manager who in turn reports to the General Manager of Hospital & Specialist Services.
Hospital & Specialist Service - Directors of Nursing
– provides professional leadership for nurses within their particular hospital. This includes management, planning, development, ensuring the quality of nursing practice is maintained, and that staff and resources are utilised in such a way that ensures optimum patient care is delivered. Directors of Nursing report to the relevant Hospital General or Group Manager who in turn reports to the General Manager of Hospital & Specialist Services.
