CANTERBURY DHB QUALITY & PATIENT SAFETY COUNCIL

About Us

The Canterbury DHB Quality and Patient Safety Council was established in 2002 to promote quality improvement within the DHB and provide governance for the organisation with respect to quality and patient safety. The Council promotes the sharing of information and establishment of best practice across the Canterbury DHB. Good initiatives are communicated and effective partnerships across the DHB are facilitated by the inclusion of representatives from the Canterbury DHB operating division and community based services.

The Canterbury DHB Quality and Patient Safety Council facilitates continuous improvement by supporting, guiding and cooperating with people within the organisation who can positively influence quality care. The Council identifies key issues for quality improvement and promotes the development of appropriate information systems for monitoring and reporting on quality. The council also supports and promotes training and education programmes for quality.

The Canterbury DHB Quality and Patient Safety Council sponsors the Canterbury DHB Quality Strategic Plan and the Canterbury DHB Quality and Innovation Awards.

Examples of some of the work undertaken by the Council to date include the development of Canterbury DHB wide policies, which promote quality and patient safety. Three key patient safety policies are 'culture of patient safety policy', 'open disclosure' and 'no blame incident/accident reporting policy'.

The Canterbury DHB Quality and Patient Safety Council has also conducted a Quality Stocktake Questionnaire survey. This questionnaire was circulated to community providers and assisted in the council gaining a better understanding of what quality activities and reporting is occurring in the community sector and opportunities to further explore.

The Canterbury DHB Quality and Patient Safety Council is also working towards the identification, development and establishment of Quality Clinical Indicators in four highlighted Disease priority areas. Initial indicators for the Canterbury DHB Strategic Plan Core Direction priority areas of Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease have been agreed and reports are being developed. Work continues on the other core directions priority areas of Respiratory Disease and Cancer.

The Canterbury DHB Quality and Patient Safety Council is also contributing towards the Canterbury DHB Health Services Planning project. This planning project will take a fresh look at all of the health services that the Canterbury DHB provides and funds. The purpose of this programme is to plan Canterbury's health services for the next five to ten years and is expected that this planning may significantly reshape our health services.
