Ward 25

Ward 25 is a 27 bed Respiratory Ward located within the medical cluster at Christchurch Hospital.

Inpatient care is provided for people with respiratory and / or other medical conditions. From exacerbations of COPD and Asthma through to Pneumothoracies and Pleural Effusions requiring chest drainage, a range of respiratory conditions are managed on Ward 25.

Patients are admitted either acutely or as arranged admissions to the ward. Other patients seen on the ward include those returning for outpatient visits.

One bed is reserved for the admission of patients with acute respiratory failure requiring Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV). This is a relatively new service which is predominately nurse led and ensures the delivery of NIV via bi-level positive airway pressure (BiPAP) within the ward environment.

As the largest tertiary hospital in the South Island, Christchurch Hospital is seen as being a major centre for Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Patients with CF from throughout the upper South Island attend regular outpatient clinics and some require inpatient  admissions on Ward 25.

Nursing staff are competent in the management of Portacaths and other central venous access devices, as well as chest drainage devices and Non-Invasive Ventilation (CPAP & BiPAP).

Ward 25 offers an environment which supports learning and professional development. Along with a comprehensive orientation programme and regular in-service education, links with the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology as well as Otago University and the Christchurch School of Medicine provide a number of opportunities for staff to advance their practice.

Nurses work eight hour rostered shifts, comprising morning, afternoon and night shifts. The nursing team also includes the Charge Nurse Manager, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Educator and Hospital Aide who all provide support to nursing staff.

Ward 25, and the wider respiratory department, has a strong interdisciplinary focus, and nursing staff work in collaboration with medical staff and allied health professionals to ensure the provision of quality patient care.

Ward 25 has a close working relationship with Cardio-Respiratory Outreach and other community providers. Links with the community are also established through supports groups including the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation, Respiratory Relief Society, the Cystic Fibrosis Association, and the Cancer Society.
