As
part of a tertiary institution Christchurch
Emergency Department provides access to Level Six acute care for
the people of Christchurch
and the surrounding Canterbury region. The Senior and Junior staff
numbers reflect this level of service provision. Round-the-clock
timely access to Consultant Emergency Physicians and a large Registrar
presence is required for one of the busiest Emergency Departments in
the Southern Hemisphere.
Currently there are 10 Fellows of the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (FACEMs) with a number of Medical Officers, Registrars, Senior Home Officers and House Officers.
The department was the first in Australasia and is still the only one in New Zealand to have an established university appointment [Michael Ardagh] holds the first Emergency Medicine Professorial Chair in New Zealand].
