ORAL HEALTH EDUCATION RESOURCE FOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS

Information About the Resource

The purpose of the Oral Health Education Resource is to support secondary school teachers to incorporate oral health education in their school’s Year 9 and 10 health education programmes.

The activities in the resource are developed to engage and educate students to:

• develop the knowledge, understandings, skills and attitudes they need to make safe choices regarding oral health, and

• to create an environment that supports overall health and hauora.

The activities in the Oral Health Education Resource are related to level five of the Health and Physical Education Learning Area in the New Zealand Curriculum (see Oral Health Activities Matrix, p. 7). The resource has a flexible structure so that teachers can choose what activities to use according to their students’ needs, their teaching plans and the time available. As oral health relates well with other areas of health, the oral health activities can also be used to complement learning that is taking place within existing health units. Such units could include, but are not limited to, influences on personal wellbeing, safety management and nutritional needs. Some of the activities are also relevant to other subjects, such as science.

What the Resource Contains

• a teacher’s guide to the oral health activities and their links to the New Zealand Curriculum

• a CD with resources and worksheets for students matching the activities in the guide

• complimentary oral health promotional resources and materials

Resources for Low Decile Schools

Oral health products, such as toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss, will be available for Canterbury, South Canterbury and West Coast secondary schools at decile 1-5 utilising the resource for their Year 9 and/or 10 health programme. See information provided with the resource.

Resource Availability

The resource will be distributed to all Canterbury, South Canterbury and West Coast secondary schools at the beginning of November 2010. Please contact us if you are interested in the resource, but are not covered by this distribution.
