FREE DENTAL CARE FOR TEENS
![]() |
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
How does the free dental service for teens work?
From Year 9 (high school) most school based dental clinics
will no longer be available for regular dental care. However, the dental service
for teens will then be available. This service is provided by dentists and is
free until you turn 18 years of age.
The teen dental service is available whether you are
at school, doing a course, working or unemployed.
During Year 8 school dental clinics will provide a transfer form so you can choose a dentist.
If you are not enrolled with a dentist during Year 8, you can enrol at any time before turning 18 by contacting a dentist who provides the teen dental service.
For more information about enrolling click here...
Through the service you are entitled to a check-up every 12 months, and most
treatments (such as fillings) free of charge. Make sure to
go for a check-up every 12 months!

Am I eligible for free dental care?
Most teenagers living in NZ are eligible for free dental care until turning 18 years of age - and that is whether you're at school, course, work or unemployed. However, if you are not sure if you are eligible for free dental care, you can have a look at the eligibility criteria for publicly funded health services on the Ministry of Health website, click here.

Changing dentists
If you would like to change the dentist you are enrolled with for the teen dental service, you can do so by contacting the dentist you want to change to and let them know you want to enrol with them. You should also let your old dentist know you are changing to another provider, so they are aware you will not be coming in anymore.
