GynaecologyGynaecology Services provides inpatient, day patient and outpatient treatment for women in the Canterbury region and tertiary services for the South Island.

This service provides elective and 24 hour acute care.

The main areas are:

  • Acute Gynaecology Assessment
  • Outpatient
  • Department
  • Inpatient Ward
  • Colposcopy Clinic
  • Cervical Screening Programme
  • Lyndhurst Hospital

Acute Gynaecology Assessment

The Acute Gynaecology Assessment is where women are referred by practitioners to be assessed by medical staff regarding antenatal, postnatal or Gynaecology emergencies. Women may be admitted from this area or treated and discharged home.

Colposcopy

For outpatients and Colposcopy, a woman's General Practitioner will send a referral to these areas for specialist consultation. Both areas use a booking system to schedule an appropriate appointment.

Cervical Screening

The Canterbury Cervical Screening Programme is part of the Gynaecology Services. This is a national programme where all women that have a cervical smear are automatically registered on to the programme unless they sign themselves off. The register is a safety net for women reminding them if they have missed their regular smear test and if any abnormal results need to be followed up.
