What the Canterbury Clinical Skills Unit is responsible for

The Clinical Skills Unit is committed to:

• working in partnership with relevant staff in the Canterbury District Health Board
• training agencies associated with healthcare within the Canterbury region
• other District Health Boards and national professional training organisations.

Our Mission Statement

The vision of the Clinical skills unit is to establish the Unit as a national leader in clinical skills training and simulation. The development of an enthusiastic and motivated steering group to support this vision and assist the Unit with both its short and longer term objectives is of major importance.

Our Objectives

• To provide a support network for staff involved in clinical training in the Canterbury Health Board region
• Promote the Canterbury Clinical Skills Unit as the lead provider of clinical skills and simulation training in the region and nationally
• Contribute to the provision of consistently high quality clinical skills and simulation education, thereby enabling staff to provide a high standard of patient care and minimise risk

Clinical Skills Definition

Clinical skills bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and clinical practice in a protected learning environment for both under graduate and post graduate training as well as ongoing professional development. Clinical skills are broadly defined as any actions that have an effect on patient outcomes including:

• Clinical reasoning and decision making
• Team-work and communication
• Clinical examination and invasive procedures

Using hands on simulation supports teams and individuals to develop a level of preparation and insight that is best learned and practiced in a realistic environment that can then be readily translated into clinical practice to improve communication, collaboration, teamwork and crisis management (Centre for medical education 2012).

We are located within Christchurch Hospital, Level 5, Riverside.
