Update on Condition of Avalanche Survivors

The two men who were taken to Christchurch hospital earlier this afternoon following an avalanche at Mt Cook, have now been seen by a team of medical specialists.

Condition of Two Survivors of Avalanche

Two men are in Christchurch hospital following an avalanche at Mt Cook.  The Clinical Charge Nurse at the hospital’s Emergency Department, Paul O’Donovan said a 42 year old man is in a very serious condition with head injuries. The other man is aged 35 and has moderate injuries.

The Chief Executive of the Canterbury District Health Board, Mrs Jean O’Callaghan said today that the death of newborn Hana Yanagawa at Christchurch Women’s hospital last year had been a rare and tragic event for all concerned.

Ward Closed Due To MRSA

The neurology and neurosurgery ward at Christchurch hospital will be closed for a week from today (Monday) while infection control measures are in place following a further MRSA case being identified.

Surplus Templeton Land Sale

The Canterbury District Health Board has sold 66 hectares of surplus land at Templeton to Ngai Tahu for a sum in excess of $1.9 million. The proceeds of the sale are to be used for the improvement or development of public health facilities in Canterbury.

New Rural PHO Established Tomorrow

Canterbury’s second primary health organisation (PHO) will be formally launched tomorrow (1 October). The rural Canterbury PHO will cover Ashburton, Rangiora, Rakaia, Methven and Oxford. The PHO, the third in the South Island, will serve an estimated 50,000 enrolled patients and will include 31 general practitioners and 39 practice nurses.
