Dr Ganly attended Medical School at Cambridge and Oxford Universities graduating in 1982. He trained in Haematology in London - Hammersmith Hospital, Hospital For Sick Children at Great Ormond St - before returning to Cambridge and the United Kingdom Medical Research Laboratories where as an MRC Training Fellow his PhD thesis investigated molecular genetics of cancers. Haematology training was completed in 1992 at Auckland. He was appointed as Consultant Haematologist to Western General Hospital, Edinburgh in 1994 and in 1999 moved to Christchurch as Senior Lecturer in Clinical Haematology for the University of Otago and Consultant Haematologist at Canterbury Health Laboratories. Since 2007 he has been full time in the latter role. Dr Ganly's expertise and interests include the diagnosis and management of malignant haematological diseases, stem cell transplantation and clinical research. He is the chairman of the South Island Haematopoietic Stem Cell transplant group. He is a member of the European and Australasian Haematology Societies, Australasian Lymphoma and Leukaemia Group, European Group for Blood and Bone Marrow Transplantation.
