Curriculum Vitae

After studying Medicine at the University of Queensland, Prof George worked for a time at Christchurch Hospital and then in General Practice. In 1981 he commenced training in Pathology at Christchurch Hospital and in 1986 was appointed as a consultant in Chemical Pathology. He is currently the Clinical Director of Canterbury Health Laboratories, the largest, and best-equipped, tertiary medical laboratory in New Zealand. Prof George has extensive experience in private and public pathology and in the development and application of computerised laboratory information systems. He is a consultant to many private and public hospitals in both the North and South islands of New Zealand, a Clinical Professor (University of Otago), a Senior Fellow (University of Canterbury), Associate Editor for Chemical Pathology (RCPA Handbook) and an RCPA Examiner for Chemical Pathology and Genetics. He is a member of numerous international professional societies and the recipient of over 30 major research grants. The overall theme of his research interests has always been the molecular pathology of human disease and the development and application of methods for the diagnosis of these conditions. While current activities are diverse there is an underlying theme related to cardiac risk (fibrinogen, thrombosis, hyperlipidaemia, homocysteine, sub-clinical vitamin deficiencies and the use of novel cardiac markers). He is also involved in research projects related to the historical roots of the laboratory (haemoglobinopathies, thalassaemia) and to its diagnostic activities (cystic fibrosis, iron metabolism and neurogenetics). More recently he has developed some research projects in the area of cancer genetics (PTEN/Cowden disease, retinoblastoma). Prof George has published over 200 papers in international journals:
