Chris first graduated in 1978 in Natural Sciences (Pharmacology) from Cambridge University. He went on to graduate with MB BS (honours in Pathology) in 1981 from King's College Hospital in London before first moving to New Zealand to take up House Surgeon appointments. He went on to train as a Specialist Physician in Diabetes and Endocrinology as well as a Chemical Pathologist. As well as doing sessions in Diabetes and Lipid Disorders, he maintains an affiliation to the Lipid & Diabetes Research Group. His research has led to an MD thesis for studies into the patho-physiology of diabetic complications as well as over 100 peer-reviewed publications emanating from broad metabolic interests. He served for several years in private sector Pathology before taking up post with Canterbury Health Laboratories in 1999.

Chris is an examiner for the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia and Vice-President (Education and Training) of the Australasian Association of Clinical Biochemists. He is a Member of the Australasian Creatinine Consensus Working Group, the Expert Panel for Clinical Commenting of the RCPA-EQA Programme and on the Editorial Board of Clinical Biochemist Reviews. Chris is also a Corresponding Member of the Committee of Evidence Based Laboratory Medicine of the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC).
