Prior to her appointment as Secretary to the Head of Department of Clinical Biochemistry in 1978, Sophie undertook advanced training at Hales Secreterial College in Melbourne and worked as executive/personal assistant in large commercial enterprises in Australia and New Zealand, followed by six years at two of the main teaching hospitals in the University of London group - The Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital (Department of Respiratory Medicine) and University College Hospital Medical School (Department of Human Metabolism).
