Richard graduated MB. BS. from Guy's Hospital, London in 1991 and trained as a general Practitioner in the UK gaining MRCGP in 1996. He worked in general practice both in the UK and following immigration in 1998, in the far north of New Zealand. Richard undertook further study at the University of Auckland completing an MSc(Hons) majoring in chemistry in 2006. He returned to hospital medicine initially working in Waitemata before moving to Christchurch in 2007. He continued in hospital medicine as a medical registrar and joined Canterbury Health Laboratories in 2008 to commence training in Chemical Pathology.
