Anja was born and raised in Germany where she graduated in medicine in 1993. Virology has been an interest of hers since she completed an MD thesis on one of the proteins of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Her first contact with New Zealand was an attachment to Grey Hospital in 1992 as a Trainee Intern. Subsequently she worked as a house officer and senior house officer in the UK from 1993 - 1996 and immigrated to NZ in 1996. In 1997 Anja graduated with a diploma in teaching at secondary school level from the Auckland College of Education, but decided to return to medicine as a Virology Registrar at LabPlus in Auckland from 1998 - 1999. She joined the CDHB in 2000 as a Microbiology Registrar and passed Part 1 Microbiology specialty examination in August 2002 and the final part 2 examination in August 2004. Since September 2004 Anja has been given fellowship with the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA). Anja's special interests are metapneumovirus, molecular diagnostics, and antibiotic resistance detection, but they extend, perhaps because of her teaching background, to improvement of health education in the field of Microbiology.
