A new (Roche - Elecsys) method for measuring Brain Natriuretic Peptide was introduced on 1st June 2002.
Results from this new method are not simply interchangeable with any other method for BNP hormone (see graphs below for inter-conversion of our new and old values).
This new method measures the N-terminal peptide from the pro-BNP molecule.
The reference range in healthy persons is less than 40 pmol/L
Levels greater than 220 pmol/L (provisional) for this method of measuring BNP strongly suggests heart failure in newly symptomatic (breathless) patients, but all clinical information should be taken into account.
For clinical assistance with interpretation of results (or out of hours requests for this measurement) please contact:
Dr Mark Richards, Dr Gary Nicholls, Dr Eric Espiner,
Dr Penny Hunt or Dr Steven Soule
For laboratory and technical assistance please contact Dr Tim Yandle or Steve Fisher, Endolab, Christchurch Hospital.
The test price has increased from $44.00 to $50.00
This test has been assessed by the Christchurch Cardio-Endocrine Group and is distributed by Roche Diagnostics.
