CHILD HEALTH SERVICE
General Information
The Canterbury District Health Board, Child Health Service at Christchurch Hospital is a regional service
providing specialist care for children throughout the South Island.
The Service is made up of five areas:
- Children’s Acute Assessment Unit
(CAA). 24 hour 7 day a week unit for assessment, treatment and follow-up of
acute admissions for the Child Health Service.
- Ward 21.
A surgical inpatient unit for all elective and acute surgery, for children
over 1-15 years of age and all children with Cystic Fibrosis and Burns.
- Ward 22.
A medical inpatient unit with surgery for children under 1 year old. This
includes the High Dependency Unit (HDU).
- Children’s Haematology and
Oncology Centre (CHOC). This unit is for the
diagnosis, treatment and management of children with haematological
conditions and cancer from around the South Island.
- Paediatric Outpatients.
An outpatient and 5 bed day unit that is open from 0800-1600 hours
Monday-Friday.

Information for Families
- Parking - see our parking information

- Visiting Hours - we welcome parents and caregivers at all times.
Others may visit 11am to 8pm. Security guards will give passes after hours,
once you have been cleared by the ward.
- Staying With Your Child - A parent/caregiver is able to stay
overnight and we encourage this. A day bed or chair will be made available.
- Accommodation - is available for out of town families. One option
is Ronald McDonald House

- Meals - all food and drink is provided by the hospital for
children, but if you require special formula for your baby you will need to
bring this with you.
